Behind the Colours: Night Sky Collection
The Night Sky Collection was inspired by dark winter evenings, star-filled skies, the glow of the aurora and the softness of falling snow.
The result is a palette built around deep navy, royal blue, teal, purple, and galaxy fleece, bringing together plain tones and patterned detail in a collection that feels rich, thoughtful, and full of depth.
The inspiration behind the collection
The starting point for this collection was the glow of a Christmas star against a dark evening sky, softened by the feeling of snow falling through cold winter light. That contrast between brightness, depth, and softness became the foundation for the palette.
As the collection developed, it moved away from being a strictly Christmas-led idea and became something more design-focused. I wanted the colours to feel seasonal without being limited to one moment in December.
Instead, the idea evolved into a celebration of winter itself, taking inspiration from night skies, the aurora and the colours that appear against the darkness.
A palette inspired by winter skies
At the heart of the Night Sky Collection are navy, royal blue, teal, and purple plain fleece shades paired with galaxy fleece for contrast and texture.
Each colour brings something slightly different to the collection:
- Navy adds depth and grounding
- Royal blue adds a brighter, more vivid pop of colour
- Teal brings brightness and cool winter light
- Purple adds richness and a subtle sense of evening drama
- Galaxy fleece ties everything together with a more atmospheric, star-filled feel
Together, they create a palette that feels cool, layered, and expressive. The plain fleece tones keep the collection balanced, while the galaxy fleece gives it its distinct character.
Seasonal, but not overly themed
One of the things I wanted most from this collection was for it to feel special in winter without becoming overly festive or novelty-led.
The Night Sky Collection is seasonal in mood rather than theme. It reflects winter through colour, contrast, and atmosphere, rather than relying on traditional Christmas colours or motifs.
For me, that balance is important. I always want Nova Zeal collections to feel thoughtful and design-led first, with colour doing the storytelling.
Designed for play, created with intention
As with every Nova Zeal collection, the Night Sky palette has been designed not just to look beautiful, but to work across products designed for everyday life, play and enrichment.
Whether it appears in snuffle mats, snuffle balls, scruffle balls or accessories, the collection brings together visual impact and purposeful design. The rich tones and layered fleece combinations make it feel bold and distinctive, while the overall palette still feels calm, cohesive, and considered.
That mix of playfulness and intention is always at the centre of what I create.
