From Healing to Handmade: Remi’s Recovery & Our Highland Health Collaboration
On New Year’s Day, our sweet Remi suddenly couldn’t walk. He had been struck by Grade 3 Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD)—a serious spinal condition that can cause pain, limited mobility, or even paralysis in dogs. What followed was an emotional whirlwind of veterinary care, recovery, and, unexpectedly, a beautiful collaboration rooted in compassion and creativity.
🩺 Understanding IVDD
IVDD occurs when the cushioning discs between a dog’s vertebrae rupture or herniate, pressing on the spinal cord. In Grade 3 cases like Remi’s, dogs often lose the ability to walk but still feel deep pain—a sign that recovery is still possible.
Thanks to the quick response and support of Moray Coast Vets, Remi was referred just one day later to The Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies in Edinburgh, where he underwent spinal surgery. Their expert team stabilised his condition and gave us the first glimmer of hope.
Recovery & a New Connection
Following surgery, Remi was referred to Dominique at Highland Health Veterinary Care in Beauly—a contemporary, forward-thinking practice that offers alternative therapies including acupuncture, veterinary herbal medicine and rehabilitation, alongside general veterinary medicine. Dominique, who founded and runs the clinic herself, brings an incredible depth of care and understanding—not just for the animals she treats, but also for the people behind them.
During Remi’s regular acupuncture sessions, we naturally ended up chatting about our own journeys. I shared what I do—designing and handmaking enrichment and tug toys for pets. Dominique immediately understood the value these kinds of toys bring to recovery and general wellbeing. As a business owner herself, she knew the challenges—but she was so supportive and enthusiastic about my work.
From Story to Product
Dominique encouraged me to put together a small, thoughtful batch of enrichment and tug toys that would be available for sale within the clinic’s waiting room. We also designed a bespoke snuffle mat inspired by Highland Health’s own branding and natural style.
This wasn’t just a business opportunity—it was a full-circle moment. What started as a difficult chapter in Remi’s life led to a partnership rooted in shared values: compassion, wellbeing, and community.
Why It Matters
This collaboration is personal. It reminds me how even the hardest days can grow into something meaningful—and how connections made in the name of healing can spark creativity, trust, and shared joy.
